Quiet excitement settled over the Upper Room as Fletcher Park Inn retirees gathered for vespers on Friday evening, August 18. Some weeks before summer, vesper leader Ed Bagwell had announced a special summer offering would be taken on this date. The offering was to be used for educational projects handled by Alan and Pauline Knowles at Riverside Farms Institute in Zambia, Africa.

Soon after promotion began for the summer offering, it was announced that an anonymous $5000 matching challenge donation had been given. Every dollar given would be matched dollar for dollar for a maximum offering of $10,000 for Riverside Farms.

Alan and Pauline have been serving for 38 years at the institute in Zambia. Its services range from elementary education to adult education. It also includes farming instruction, tailoring and a huge banana plantation. The primary age program is of special interest to Pauline and education for the most vulnerable is of great importance. She oversees their tattered clothing is replaced with clean, repaired school uniforms. Alan works with teams of students building One-day churches, roofing old churches, and drilling and repairing wells. Most recently he has directed in the building of the primary and secondary buildings for a total enrollment of nearly 500 students.

On August 18, Alan and Pauline were present in the Upper Room. After they each gave their report, the offering was received and counted. With praise and thanksgiving, it was learned that the offering totaled $10,200. This was the first- ever summer vesper offering and the retirees of Fletcher Park Inn praised God from whom all blessings flow for the privilege of supporting His work in Zambia, Africa. “For I was hungry and you gave me meat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink;…naked, and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me.”
